Mai Abdo was born and raised in Jerusalem. She received a BA in English from Al Quds University, a Master’s degree in Education from Bethlehem University, and a Master’s degree in English from Birzeit University. Mai began her teaching career as an elementary school English teacher, where she later became an Assistant Principal. Part of her work aimed at introducing coexistence projects into the school’s curriculum. One project in particular involved the Bible Lands Museum, where she brought Palestinian students from her school as well as students from Israeli schools to work on the “Figure of Abraham," allowing students to share stories and identify commonalities between Islam and Judaism. Mai has been involved in opposing the Separation Wall, which was to be built through her village, Jabal Mukaber, and along with others from her village was able to take the case to court. More recently, Mai helped organize a peace concert at the Sheik Sad Checkpoint, where children sang for peace in Arabic, Hebrew, and English. Since then, Abdo opened Azhar Aljabal, the first women’s organization in Jabal Mukaber, and started the village’s first female basketball team. She is very active in programs focused on empowering women and volunteers with three different NGOS in Jerusalem. In 2010 she will be CTE’s founding Coordinator for the Beyond Bridges: Israel-Palestine program.
